Look for what opens and closes,
what shifts and then blends;
rearrangement of light and shadow,
shimmering hues of moss on the forest floor,
the face of a flower turning toward the sun’s path.
Consider the spiraled dance of moth larvae
suspended from autumn leaves,
the tentative trail of animal tracks in the snow,
the silent flight of the barred owl
through the darkest of night.
Accept that air is simply what it is
and let your thoughts sail like birds in flight.
Know that fire ignites
and your actions are sparks that can change lives.
Understand that water is willful
and your memory alters your mood.
Remember that earth holds all of it
and resonates most when gravity growls
in your gut like a hungry wolf.
Let spirit sing softly within you;
a living current of change.
Note when its cadence shifts
and forms intent; when tension lifts,
when breath slows and your heart opens.
Listen when ancestors call in your dreams.
Send love to your descendants and
rest knowing they will someday wonder too.

This poem is inspired by the work of Andreas Weber, German biologist, philosopher and nature writer. Weber’s work reevaluates traditional scientific understanding of conscious life and he proposes that all living beings, like humans are not biological machines, but living, creative agents fueled by meaning and expression.
In his book “The Biology of Wonder” Weber explores the idea of a “poetic ecology” where feelings and emotions, including subjectivity and imagination are at the foundation of all life. I am grateful for how his work has helped me further understand Earth’s dynamic web of interconnected relationships and the biosphere as a “meaning-creating and poetic reality”.

May these words bring truth
and healing through open hands and hearts.
And then, let it flow back into our Mother Earth
for the love of all her beings.
