Threshold, Early Spring

today I heard the undertone
that hums beneath the last of snow
where sun rays pluck
the final threads of winter
up through cold hard loam
and sharp crystals of ice

tomorrow, as light leans
longer into day, I will watch
those silver threads untangle--
ravelling into strings
that thrum in warming air

and soon enough,
the earth will sing the last
of winter’s dark lament into
spring's bright chorus

my world will shimmer
in warm air and shining water

my life will resonate with love and fire
while green shoots push through all of it

Music pairing: In spite of its title, this wonderful composition Shine You No More by Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen captures the energy and joy of spring to me. It was recorded live at the University Aula in Oslo, 9 January 2024.

May these words bring truth and healing
through open hands and hearts. And then,
let it flow back into our Mother Earth
for the love of all her beings.

  1. May winter wait until we next meet … thank you Diane for this beautiful ode to the winter as she fades …

  2. When I first looked at “I saw the sun’s rays pluck the final threads of winter
up through cold hard loam” I read loom”. I love your references to light leaning, earth singing, strings thrumming.

    1. Awww. Thanks Judith! That works too! At one point as I was working on this poem I was using weaving as the connecting image/theme but eventually I changed it to be more about light and sound.
