I thought I was a raven
but I mistook desire for wings
the sky was indifferent
and I tumbled down
I thought I was a wolf
but I let hunger guide me
the forest was heedless
and I lost my way
I thought I was a salmon
but my instincts failed me
the current was swift
and it swept me off course
maybe I’m a mountain
steady now and constant
maybe I’m a valley
warm in sun and verdant in the rain
I will wear indigo blue and black feathers
with cedar green and muddy brown
I will invite grackles to nest in my hair
and chatter with them at dawn
I will let go of longing
and ask spirit to guide me home
