Play On

You were formed and born
from the harmonies of all that was the best of us —
inspired by my longing,
and shaped by your father’s pride.

And when you came into this world,
my heart sang with a mother’s love
for all that our lives were in that moment
and all I knew you would become.

Music was everything to us then.
It filled our lives, our hearts and our dreams.
And as you grew,
the tunes that filled our days were your lullabies,
and song lyrics were your bedtime stories.

Butterflies and zebras, moonbeams, and a fairy tale,
bustles in your hedgerow,
and a spring clean for the May Queen.
Skating away on the thin ice of a new day,
with blackbirds singing in the dead of night.

Now that you have become a young man,
I watch as your fingers fly
across the strings of your guitar,
and the notes of your songs
fill our house with music.

My beloved youngest son
my musical child,
I hope you know that
my life is richer for the music that you bring us
and I am proud of all you have become.

‘Cause even when I dream of you,
the sweetest dream will never do.

  1. What a beautiful tribute to Cam and beautiful words in their own right. This line particularly reverberates for me -“‘Cause even when I dream of you,
the sweetest dream will never do.'”. I was deeply touched by this poem and as I am working to reparent myself I will speak these words for myself as well

    1. Thank you Lorna! The italicized lines in the poem are lyrics from songs that are special to Cam and I. The lyrics you refer to are from a song by the band Aerosmith and have extra special significance. I’ll tell you the story sometime. ❤️🎶

  2. Ahh, such loving and melodious words Diane! Cam is definitely a marvellous music man!
This piece brings a delightful smile to my face and warms me heart strings. Let live play on!

  3. A beautiful Poem Diane. Hope all is well there. hugs.
