This post is written as part of a blogger’s chain that I was asked to participate in by my fellow writer and wise friend Sophia Bonnie Wooden (http://sophiabonniewodin.blogspot.ca/). Although neither of us are keen on chains, we did like this one which prompts bloggers to answer three basic questions about their work and then nominate other bloggers to join in.
What am I working on?
I am both blessed and cursed to make a living as a writer, writing health reports and other materials, so it is often difficult for me to carve out the time to write creatively. When I do, lately, my focus has been on stream-of-consciousness writing that I turn into poetry or prose and publish on this blog. I have also started an urban fantasy / dystopian novel set in the not-too-distant future about a young woman who gets drawn into a world of magick and mystery.
How does my work differ from others of its genre? Why do I do what I do?
My poetry focuses broadly on the magick I find in the natural world. It currently documents the path of my journey to discover the meaning of Awen, which is a difficult concept to pin down. Roughly it can be defined as flowing spirit, life essence, prophetic insight and/or poetic inspiration. Awen is associated with the Welsh deities Ceridwen and Taliesin who I feel strongly akin to since my own background is also Welsh.
Although this subject gives me the illusion of focus, it is really all-encompassing and allows me the freedom to write about almost anything I wish!
How does my creative process work?
I find I do my best writing very early in the morning during those delicate and tenuous moments when I am still living in my right brain. I usually start by simply writing stream of consciousness and then see where that goes. That is the easy part! The hard part is then working with the raw material to produce something that even slightly resembles what I think might be art.
