Small Gods

I heard there are small gods
of endless becoming
restless within endings
hopeful in beginnings
stirred by a whispered prayer
quickened by a simple touch
they tend to sorrow
that holds no reason
riding first thaw
slipping through frost crack
entering ice break
rising with bud wake
delighting in flower burst
tasting berry drop
there in wind shift
birdsong turning
leaf fall longing
quivering
in the movement
of green to yellow

I was sad to hear that the author John Crowley passed away this summer. I loved his writing and have been catching up on novels I missed. “Small gods of endless becoming“ were mentioned briefly near the end of his book Aegypt and inspired this poem.

A serene image featuring blue birds perched on branches against a soft, pastel background, with the text 'small gods' displayed below.

This poem was conceived and grown organically from my own unique human experience, thoughts, efforts, knowledge and research.

  1. Diane,

You nailed it. The Small Dieties are everywhere. We need to give them more recognition and reverence. 🔥
