these ordinary August days
were once enough;
a simple breeze,
whispering leaves,
warm days drifting into nights
but now the garden wavers
in the hot and hazy light
and wind exhales
the breath of woodsmoke;
it catches in our throats
and stings our eyes
and still clouds sail above,
warm air gently lifts branches,
leaves flutter,
cicadas send their long unending love song
and I wait for dahlias to bloom
