Meech Valley Field Notes

*
a young man stands
staring up
into endless sunlit sky
where hours before
aurora danced
green red purple
through infinite black

**
far above
sandhill cranes
climb higher and higher
on thermal currents

their staccato cry
is exultant

***
below
two women walk west
along a worn path
that bisects broad fields
of newly-planted
saplings

****
in the distance
October woods
are waiting on the ridge

oak maple
pine hemlock
shimmer
green red gold

their brilliance
is a balm

*****
even
black capped
chickadees
rejoice

  1. Greetings Diane,

I enjoyed Meech Valley Field Notes. I found myself desiring to be at that time and place, enjoying the aurora borealis. Being in the city, I don’t get quite the same experience.

    1. Thank you Gloria! I had more complex ambitions for this poem, but spareness and simplicity seem to be the right thing! As a poet, I’m sure you will understand! ❤️

  2. One of these days I will figure out how to reply properly.  Did you
actually get to see the aurora?  I looked every night but there were too
    many lights.

    Looking forward,

    Judith
