a young man stands
staring up
into endless sunlit sky
where hours before
aurora danced
green red purple
through infinite black
**
far above
sandhill cranes
climb higher and higher
on thermal currents
their staccato cry
is exultant
***
below
two women walk west
along a worn path
that bisects broad fields
of newly-planted
saplings
****
in the distance
October woods
are waiting on the ridge
oak maple
pine hemlock
shimmer
green red gold
their brilliance
is a balm
*****
even
black capped
chickadees
rejoice

Greetings Diane,
I enjoyed Meech Valley Field Notes. I found myself desiring to be at that time and place, enjoying the aurora borealis. Being in the city, I don’t get quite the same experience.
Thank you, Michael!
Have you been out and about? Did you see the aurora?
Lovely to read your word pictures.

Yes! I’ve managed to get over to the Gatineau a few times and hope to get back a few more! It is such a gorgeous time of year there! 🍂
Diane I so identified with this poem. Yesterday I too marveled at the hawk on a line and one in a tree and the colours…so gorgeous, so many this fall. Thankyou for articulating it all so well!!
Thank you Gloria! I had more complex ambitions for this poem, but spareness and simplicity seem to be the right thing! As a poet, I’m sure you will understand! ❤️
One of these days I will figure out how to reply properly. Did you
actually get to see the aurora? I looked every night but there were too
many lights.
Looking forward,
Judith
No. Sadly, I was unable to see them live from where I live, but could still feel their energy when I went hiking in Meech Valley the next day.
