Approaching Solstice

* listen *

The darkness calls,
but these short days
are such a tribute to the light.

Today,
I watched December sunset linger
on dusted snow that lay
among the brittle yellow grass.

Pink and amber hues
spilled on to icy blue
and scattered violet shades
you’d never glimpse in summer.

It was then I finally understood
that light is offered by degrees —
a spiraled gift of seasons
such as these.

  1. Beautiful Diane! Your poem really caught that magical feeling sunset light has as Earth approaches the winter solstice. Long quick shadows bouncing between natural prisms of ice.
