Balancing Act

(A poem for the Spring Equinox)

crack open the window
of your broken winter heart —
the cool air smells like hope

notice swelling buds on maple trees
and sweet sap sliding down the bark

look, tiny green shoots are pushing
through dirty snow crystals,
delicate crocus blossoms have dared to emerge

the snowmelt has fed the rushing creek
and soaked the flattened yellow grass

last night’s rain washed the gritty salty road

there are shy smiles on street corners,
hoods are pushed back
and gloves are stuffed in pockets

someone’s car drives by, thumping bass

  1. Hi Diane – I tried to leave a comment on your site, but Word Press kept trying to get me to sign in, and I don’t have an account with Word Press any more, so it became too much of a hassle. If there’s any way you can make leaving comments a little easier, I would love it!

Meanwhile, what I wanted to say is:

Thank you! Beautiful images. Just what I need – the hope of spring!

Cheers! Hope all is well with you. We should chat again soon….

  2. Hi Diane, I enjoy this poem a lot and especially appreciate the title – it seems to me like a secret that not everyone will appreciate. I was particularly caught be the image of the “cool air smells like hope.” That really captures for me the feeling of spring. I am going to share it at an Ostara gathering I am attending tonight. Thanks so much for your creativity!
